Not such hard work

January 29, 2013 Ashley Oostdyck

A bunch of us got together recently for a Saturday of work in good company. Work in the company of good friends doesn't get much better, unless it involves cold cider and watermelon breaks. I'd like to think I got lots done, but lets face it—curious cats and cute babies. How could I ignore these two?

This Sunday

Just checking in. I'm sitting here going through photos from last year, organising and archiving. This one I took on a brief visit to California. My best friend has this plum tree in her front yard so heavy with sweet fruit it was begging me to make jam. There was no jam, just this memory of a promise.

Outside right now there is a storm raging. Our house keeps complaining with creaks and groans and I don't blame it really, the wind is brutal. Apparently Brisbane is on tornado alert!? Crazy. I took a peek outside earlier, the rain was beating so hard against the screen door I was covered in a fine mist in seconds. It was actually kind of wonderful apart from the flooding of our entry.

More soon. Stay safe Queensland friends. x

Jars full of happy

Today I made a batch of cherry jam. It's not often we get good cherries here so I grabbed some while they were sweet and local. Let's face it, making jam is tedious and fiddly. But oh the reward! When I was done we sat on the couch eating bowls of vanilla ice cream and cherry syrup, laughing between mouthfuls because it was so damn good. I have 8 jars of happiness to keep us going until next cherry season, I doubt they'll last a month.

This little muse

January 2, 2013 Ashley Oostdyck

She's not so little these days.

One of the things I love best about instant film is the timeline scattered through my house. I can watch this one grow up on a walk from the bedroom to the kitchen, or visit a californian seaside in the living room. It's kind of the best.

On the fridge, jammed in the corners of mirrors, in little frames, sometimes lost and found in the front of book covers. Most places I turn are little squares of memories that take me back to a light filled moment, captured and frozen in a dream-state forever. Even the ones I discarded as failures at the time. I find them forgotten in the bottom of drawers and old camera bags, they have their dog-eared, dusty and creased stories to tell too.

This year I'll be shooting much more instant film, for all the reasons I love so much.

And this little muse? I think she loves it as much as I do.

"Ash, let's take photos forever, let's fill the whole world with photos!"
And she kissed my camera and skipped off.

Ok. Let's.
